Susan Sarandon says her kids were 'scarred' by her 'Bull Durham' performance
Susan Sarandon is reflecting on her role in the 1988 film Bull Durham, which contributed to her wide-ranging career in addition to a family with her co-star Tim Robbins. However, the actress says that she and Robbins’s children were “scarred” after seeing parts of the movie.
The 73-year-old actress mentioned the hit film while on the BUILD Series stage, speaking about the projects that made the biggest impact on her life. “That was the first really great part that I got that I wasn’t overqualified for,” she said. “And of course, I had two kids as a result of that movie. So ... what can I say?”
When asked if the couple’s two children, Jack and Miles, ever saw the film that brought their parents together, Sarandon explains that they had quite the reaction after seeing “bits and pieces” of it during the 2003 Chaplin Award Gala where she was being honored.
“My daughter [Sarandon’s eldest child Ava Amurri, whom she shares with director Franco Amurri] laughed through the whole thing and there wasn’t even a nipple showing or anything. But then I looked over at my older son...” Sarandon says while gesturing to imitate her son’s shocked reaction. “And then my younger son, I said, ‘Well what did you think Miles?’ He said, ‘I thought it was great, mom. But scarring.’”
Footage from the 2003 event and Sarandon’s appearance on the red carpet captures the actress talking about it being the first time her children will be seeing her films.
“My kids are gonna be here, and I think they’ve seen 2 films,” she said. “So that should be pretty funny.”
During Wednesday’s BUILD appearance, Sarandon said she understood their reactions. “They don’t want to see me die in anything and they definitely don’t want to see anyone touching me in anything,” she said. “And I guess that’s just the way guys are, sons are. I get it, that’s OK.”
