Kristin Cavallari says producers regularly try to convince her to put her kids on 'Very Cavallari': 'No one will ever persuade us'
Kristin Cavallari, star of the reality show Very Cavallari, works hard to shield her three young children from the camera.
She covers their faces in social media posts, while acknowledging her own life as a parent, and keeps them off the E! show that she stars in with their dad, former NFL star Jay Cutler. It’s a rule that she plans to stick to until the kids — Camden, 7; Jaxon, 5; and 4-year-old Saylor — are old enough to decide for themselves whether to become a public figure.
“No, no one will ever persuade us,” Cavallari said Wednesday at Build Series in New York City. “Producers try every season to get our kids on the show, and we’re like, ‘No, get out of our face.’ The thing is we just want them to be kids. They’re 7, 5, and 4. They’re little. We want them to have as normal of a life as possible. You can’t have a normal life with cameras in your face. It’s hard enough being a kid, just be a kid.”
Cavallari knows how difficult it is to live a life in front of the camera. When she was a high school student, she signed onto MTV’s Laguna Beach, which led to more reality shows and life in — what can sometimes be — the harsh spotlight. Although, that fame has allowed her to do some big things, such as her clothing lines and books.
“They may want no part of this life. They may want to live a very private life, and I don’t want to rob them of that decision. When they’re old enough to decide if they want to be on social media or whatever it is then that’s a discussion that we can have... but I want them to be able to have that decision. It’s their life.”
She added that feeling judged by everyone at all times is “too much” for kids.
Cavallari herself has been living in public for so long that comments from others, people who don’t really know her at all, no longer bother her. The exception is when the words are about her little ones.
“You know, you can say whatever you want to me. I don’t care, I’m used to it by now,” Cavallari said. “But when you come after my kids, I’m like, ‘Oh, hell no. Those are my babies.’ That’s, like, the one time I just get heated.”
The former star of The Hills said it’s in those times that she reminds herself that people throwing out mean comments are often just unhappy with themselves.
The third season of Very Cavallari premieres on E! on Jan. 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
